Public Transport in Amsterdam

The municipality of Amsterdam is one of the first regions of the Netherlands to use the new electronic payment system for public transport (bus, metro, tram) called `OV-chipkaart'. Vending & charging machines (see below) can be found at metro and train stations. These machines accept cash, credit cards and Dutch bank cards. In order to use public transport, you need to:

• Read the instructions (also see this PDF brochure),
• Buy an `Anonymous OV-chipkaart' from a vending machine (3 EURO) and charge it.

A charge of 5 EURO should be sufficient to get from Amsterdam Central Station to any hotel in the city center. For example, a one-way ride on Tram 9 from Amsterdam Central Station to Plantage Badlaan costs 1.08 EURO. The charging machine closest to the conference venue is at metro station Weesperplein (see above).

Remember to check out when you get off the bus/metro/tram! Otherwise 4 EURO will be subtracted from the balance on your OV-chipkaart.

It is also still possible to use the old `strippenkaart' payment system for public transport. A strippenkaart can be bought at the service desk of any Albert Heijn (AH) supermarket.
