The syntax-semantics interface: theoretical insights and practical implementations This course covers both the theoretical foundations of the syntax-semantics interface and its incorporation into current (deep) NLP applications.
On Day 1 we will discuss the syntax-semantics interface as a mapping from syntactic to semantic structures. The central issue here is structural ambiguity (one [surface] syntactic structure with several meanings).
Day 2 will focus on how the various formalisms implement semantic
construction. We will show that the syntax-semantics interface occupies
different positions in those formalisms.
Day 3 is devoted to metonymy, its integration into syntax-semantics interfaces and its resolution (e.g., by querying lexical or ontological databases or by corpus-based statistics).
Days 4 and 5 present implementations of the syntax-semantics interface in
current NLP applications. Topics discussed here include the role of the
syntax-semantics interface in large-coverage grammars and hybrid processing, shallow semantic parsing for FrameNet, and the syntax-semantics interface in information systems (e.g., QA and IR).
