Excursion #1. Canoeing on the Alster.
| Hamburg is a city of water. According to some sources,
it has the
largest number of bridges in Europe (about 2500; at least more than
Amsterdam with 1612 official bridges). The river Alster and the canals
form a water sports paradise in the north of Hamburg.
For this excursion, we'll meet after lunch on Sunday at the
Osterbekkanal near the station Saarlandstraße (very close to
the Paul-Sudeck-Haus) and explore the canals of Hamburg by boat. We'll
follow the Osterbekkanal to the Alster and the Rondeelteich
and then paddle down the Alster to the city centre. On the way back, we
check out the Kuhmühlenteich on the river Wandse (one of the
tributaries of the Alster).

Excursion #2. Hansestadt Lübeck.
| The Hanseatic city of Lübeck (about 66km from
Hamburg) was
one of the most important cities of the Hanseatic League and retains much
of its late medieval architecture.
"Marzipan, the writer Thomas Mann, culture, the Holstentor,
Unesco World Cultural Heritage Site" are what most people associate
with Lübeck
Our excursion to Lübeck includes bus transfer and a guided
walking tour. Moreover, there will be free time to have lunch (not
included in the price) and
explore this wonderful city individually. The excursion will leave in the
morning (probably around 10 am) from a location close to the ESSLLI site.

Excursion #3. The Harbour of Hamburg.
| The harbour
is most important to Hamburg and the largest port in Germany; the city
evolved
around it and still lives on it.
Currently, Hamburg's old landmark is being transformed into Hamburg's
new landmark:
the Hafen
City, including the Elbphilharmonie, a great
concert hall right in the harbour. We'll expore the harbour by land and
by water. The tour includes a boat trip, free time to have lunch (not
included in the price) and a
guided walking tour. The excursion will start in the late morning.
