                        1 August 2008

Dear subscribers of the ESSLLI newsletter:

The start of ESSLLI is right around the corner and we have just a few last
minute updates and reminders.

HOW TO GET HERE. ESSLLI is being held at the main university building,
Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1. If you arrive at the airport, you can either take
a taxi or public transportation. If you arrive by train or by bus, you'll
come to the main train station (Hamburg HBF) from which you can get to the
ESSLLI site via public transportation.

Taxis from the airport: The easiest, but most expensive way to get to the
ESSLLI site from the airport is the taxi. There is a taxi rank right in
front of the terminal building, and the trip should cost about 20 EUR.
When you enter the taxi, tell the taxi driver that you want to go to the
main building of the university ("Universitätshauptgebäude"). The street
address is Edmund-Siemers- Allee 1. The trip takes between 15 and 25
minutes, depending on traffic.

Public transport from the airport: Right next to the taxi rank, there is a
bus stop. Take the bus of the line 110 and ask for a ticket to Dammtor.
The ticket is EUR 2.60. Line 110 buses run every 10 minutes until 11pm,
and much less frequently after that. You take the bus to its final stop,
called U Ohlsdorf (about 10 minutes) and enter the station. Look for the
S-Bahn lines S1 and S11. S11 goes directly to Dammtor, if you catch an S1,
you'll have to change at Hauptbahnhof into an S11, S21, or S31 train.

At Dammtor, follow the signs to the university. In front of the station,
turn left and walk about 200 m along Edmund-Siemers-Allee. Then you'll see
a large university building on your right with an ESSLLI banner. This is
the ESSLLI site.

Public transportation from Hamburg HBF: Take a suburban train ("S-Bahn")
or bus number 5 from Hauptbahnhof to Dammtor; a ticket is 1.30 EUR. The
bus will drop you off in front of the station building and takes about 14
minutes. At Dammtor, follow the signs to the university. In front of the
station, turn left and walk about 200 m along Edmund-Siemers-Allee. Then
you'll see a large university building on your right with an ESSLLI
banner. This is the ESSLLI site.

REGISTRATION DESK. The registration desk will be open from 9-19 on
weekdays, from 14 to 22 on 3 August, and from 16 to 22 on 10 August. If
you booked accommodation with us, you have to register first before going
to you accommodation (unless you have made alternative arrangements with
us already). If you are arriving at a time that will not allow you to
register first before going to your accommodation, please contact us as
soon as possible at esslli2008@science.uva.nl. (If we are already aware of
your arrival time, you do not have to contact us again.)

PHONE NUMBER AND EMERGENCY PHONE. During opening times, the registration
desk can be reached at +49 40 42838 4444 or by e-mail at
esslli2008@science.uva.nl. If your trip is delayed and you are not sure
whether you reach the desk before it closes, please give us a call.
Also, if you encounter any serious trouble in Hamburg, please give us a
call. After opening hours of the registration desk, we have an emergency
cell phone that you can call in case of an emergency (please only use it
in serious cases!). Its phone number is +49 176 20438255.

LUFTHANSA STRIKE. You may have heard that there was a serious Lufthansa
strike that affected their domestic and international schedules. We
already heard from the first ESSLLI participants that their domestic
flights were cancelled. Even though the strike might be over by Sunday,
Lufthansa schedules will continue to be affected until at least Monday or
Tuesday. Please pay extra attention to any changes of your itinerary to
avoid frustration during your trip to Hamburg.

Lufthansa has a special webpage for their reduced schedules during the
strike:

MUSIC ROOM. We would once more like to remind everyone that room W122 will
be reserved for several hours per day as the ESSLLI 2008 Music Room. There
will be an electronic harpsichord and a collection of sheet music. Please
bring your instruments in order to give ESSLLI 2008 a musical touch! For
the hours that the Music Room will be open, see

       http://events.illc.uva.nl/ESSLLI2008/musicroom.html

COMPUTER ACCESS. In seminar room W121 (west wing, right next to the ESSLLI
Music Room), we will set up a computer room generously sponsored by Sun
Microsystems. 24 Sunray stations will be accessible for all participants
during the opening times of the registration desks (i.e., from 9 to 19 on
weekdays). For more information, see

        http://events.illc.uva.nl/ESSLLI2008/computer.html

In addition to these facilities, there is wireless internet available in
the university buildings for which you will get a login with your
registration material, so we encourage people to bring wireless enabled
laptops if they own them.

ANNOUNCEMENTS. There will be no public announcements during ESSLLI, but
there will be bulletin boards set up in various places where schedules
changes, etc., will be made. Please check the bulletin boards regularly.
If you have an announcement to make, please talk to the people at the
registration desk.

ESSLLI PICTURE. After the morning session of Tuesday, 5 August, we will
gather (at 12:40) in front of the main building for a joint photograph of
all ESSLLI participants. Make sure you don't miss it!
