                      30 November 2007

Dear subscribers to the ESSLLI newsletter:

We shall keep you informed via the ESSLLI newsletter about
the developments in the preparation of ESSLLI 2008. The
newsletters will be sent out at least once a month, and more
often as ESSLLI 2008 approaches. For further information,
please check our webpage at

If you have any questions about ESSLLI 2008, please send an
e-mail to the coordinating e-mail address

* ESSLLI 2008 will take place in the main building of the
  Universit├Ąt Hamburg, located at Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1. It
is across the street from the railway and S-Bahn station
"Dammtor" and within the lively student quarter "Grindel"
with many cafes and restaurants. The city center is within
  walking distance.

* By early December all 10 workshops should have workshop
webpages available. These webpages can all be found linked
from the ESSLLI 2008 schedule, available at

* There is now a webpage available for the ESSLLI student
session, organized by Kata Balogh (chair), Laia Mayol,
Manuel Kirschner, and Ji Ruan. The aim of the Student
Session is to give an opportunity to students at all levels
(Bachelor, Master, and PhD students) to present and discuss
their work in progress with a possibility to get feedback
from senior researchers. Each year, 18 papers are selected
for oral presentation and a number of others for poster
  presentation. For more information, see

* We are aware that cheap travel possibilities to Hamburg are
important for many participants. We arranged an agreement
with Lufthansa, the official airline of ESSLLI 2008, that
will allow registered participants of ESSLLI to book Lufthansa
tickets from outside of Germany to Hamburg at discounted prices.

Hamburg is well-connected by budget airlines, giving participants
from many places to benefit from the very low costs of these
airlines (for instance, AirBerlin offers flights for EUR 58
including all taxes from Vienna, and EUR 94 including all taxes
from Rome). We have a list of all budget carriers serving Hamburg
  on our travel page:

* For student participants, we have reserved various housing options
to accommodate various needs. Some of the places are in student
dorms (with no meals included), others in youth hostels (with two
meals per day included in the price), others in cheap hostels. The
prices range from EUR 230 to 380 (for the duration of ESSLLI),
depending on location, comfort and facilities. More detailed
information will be made available soon.

* ESSLLI is pleased to announce as a sponsor the Association for
Symbolic Logic. Because ESSLLI is an ASL-sponsored event, student
members of the ASL can apply to the ASL for modest travel grants.
