Thematic Session: Evolution and Change of Semantic Conventions
The Amsterdam Colloquium features a special session on `Evolution and Change of Semantic Conventions'. The purpose of this special session is to help to bridge the gap between formal semantics and, on the one hand, historical linguistics, and, on the other, (computational and theoretical) approaches explaining the evolution of conventional meanings. This session features two invited speakers which will address the conventionalization of meaning from these two different perspectives:
- Regine Eckardt (Konstanz)
- James R. Hurford (Edinburgh)
In addition, there is room for 3 additional talks in this special session. We invite all those who are working at the interface between formal semantics and the evolution and/or change of semantic conventions to submit an (at most) 6 page abstract (send to vanrooy@hum.uva.nl). A committee consisting of the following persons will be responsible for selecting the abstracts:
- William Croft (Manchester)
- Regine Eckhardt (Konstanz)
- James Hurford (Edinburgh)
- Elizabeth Traugott (Stanford)
- Henk Zeevat (Amsterdam)
- Robert van Rooy (Amsterdam, chair)
Organization: Robert van Rooy
