Pronouns, reconstruction, cross-sentential anaphora
Jacobson has argued for interpreting pronouns as identity functions, rather than free variables. This paper
shows that the proposal extends to cross-sentential anaphora, without invoking abstraction over
assignments. Two ways of combining Jacobson with DMG are considered, both involving just minimal
modifications. In attempt (A), sentences with indefinites have a built-in duplicator; in attempt (B), binding
happens on-line, in the course of dynamic conjunction. "Reconstruction", which does not need on-line
binding, is shown to be easier than cross- sentential anaphora.
