In Situ Binding: a Modal Analysis

Kurtonina and Moortgat (1995) extend the categorial vocabulary with a pair of unary residuated modal operators and establish a general result showing that these operators, in interaction with the standard binary vocabulary, provide full control over the grammatical dimensions of precedence, dominance and dependency. The control allows both for the imposition of structural constraints in regimes with a flexible resource management, and for licensing structural relaxation in regimes with a more stringent structure sensitivity. We apply this method to an open question in the categorial literature: the proper characterization of an `in situ' binding operation such as required for the scopal possibilities of generalized quantifiers.
